Historic north Liverpool dock filled with 72,000 cubic metres of sand

Work is taking place to fill in a historic Liverpool dock after the council gave permission for it to be used as a metal recycling facility.

Canada Graving Dock, which sits within north Liverpool’s dock system, is currently being filled with around than 72,000 cubic metres of sand, according to Liverpool Council documents.

Photos from the site show large vehicles filling the entirety of the interior of the dock.

It comes after Liverpool Council gave permission to S Norton Scrap to expand their business, which currently operates nearby, into the dock.

The council’s planning committee backed the proposals in November.

A report submitted to them at the time said that the area would then be used as a scrap metal sorting and recycling facility.

The report said: “Development would comprise the infilling of the footprint of the dock with marine dredged sand, however the proposals do not include the addition of any permanent buildings or structures within the application site.

"S. Norton & Co. Ltd.’s existing facility to the east of the dock includes permanent offices and car parking, which would be available for use by any additional operators required as a result of the expansion to the recycling facility.

“To facilitate the proposed development, it will be necessary to demolish the fences which are located adjacent to the dock.”

Although a large and historic system, the current use for Liverpool’s many docks varies.

Until infilling began at the Graving Dock, it was used to berth ships bringing scrap metal to the existing S. Norton scrap site.

Canada Dock forms part of the extensive dock system at the Port.

It consists of a mid-19th century branch dock with a later, early 20th century graving dock addition.
