Historic Newport pub the Windsor Castle closes permanently as industry continues to struggle

A historic Newport pub has closed its doors permanently after making losses during lockdown.

The Windsor Castle, on Upper Dock Street in Newport, has been a popular pub in the city centre for decades and was a particular favourite among away supporters who attended Newport County's home games.

Its smaller size and lack of outdoor seating led to management deciding not to re-open the pub following the relaxation of restrictions put in place over the initial lockdown in July.

The pub's owner, Chris Jarvis, said he has made the difficult decision not to re-open the pub at all, and has handed the keys back to the building's owner.

Chris said he had been trying to make plans to re-open the venue, but the current restrictions meant it was unlikely the pub would be cost effective to run in the near future.

The pub underwent extensive refurbishment in 2017 after a huge fire gutted a neighbouring building.

"We've been fighting to re-open it but because of all the restrictions it's just impossible," Chris, 55, said.

"It was a very popular night time pub. The big fire next door, that set us back when we had to shut for refurbishment. We lost a lot of money through that. We refurbished it and covid has actually shut it now."

Chris said he felt "gutted" not to be able to sustain the pub any longer after nine years spent in charge of it.

The pub used to draw a large crowd on Friday and Saturday nights, Chris said, but the venue was far too small to open with physical distancing measures in place.

"The hospitality trade is getting absolutely slaughtered and we're getting no help at all from the government," Chris said.

"It's going to be the case that most of the pubs in Newport are going to go if this carries on.

"At the moment not one of us is making any money. The extra staffing needed, track and trace, and everything else - it's just not cost effective."

Earlier this month, nightclub owner Iffy Harris closed all five of his city centre venues after making "huge losses" in the wake of the coronavirus crisis.

Ashley Sicolo, the former owner of El Sieco's on High Street, announced he wouldn't be re-opening his TJs-inspired venue earlier this week.

And Atlantica Bar, also in the city centre, recently said it would have to close its doors until more substantial financial support is made available.
