Newton-le-Willows is a market town with many well known quirks.
Whether it be the massive 'Nine Arches' viaduct or the fact it birthed one of the 1980s most famous figures in Rick Astley.
However, a lesser known celebrity has stolen the town's heart in recent years.

Smokey the Cat is an immensely popular figure in the town, almost permanently residing outside the town's branch of Aldi.
The feline features regular Facebook posts from shoppers in local community groups that almost always receive hundreds of likes.
Smokey is almost certainly a local celebrity.

He is often found climbing in trolleys, sitting on displays and sleeping near the entrance.
Last year, Smokey was pictured 'helping out' with the remembrance day poppy stalls.

In a Facebook post, Ben Reed said: "Smokey the cat helping out on the poppy stall in Aldi."
The post gained over 500 likes in local Facebook page Newtonian Network.
One shopper commented: "Smokey knows what is important - he's got his priorities right. Even wearing his poppy to be a good example to others!"
The feline's collar changes with the seasons and he dresses for the holidays, sporting a pumpkin collar at Halloween, a poppy for Remembrance Day and and Christmas Tree for December.
