Historic Merseyside landmark to reopen to public

The owner of Fort Perch Rock has confirmed the historic Wirral landmark will open once again to the public.

New Brighton’s famous fort is hoping to welcome people back to take a tour around its fascinating 192-year-old building.

Confirming to the ECHO the intentions to have visitors flowing back through their doors again, Douglas Darroch said: “All is good and we look forward to the coming tourist season.”

While not able to give an exact date, the seaside landmark could be open from as early as May 17 when covid restrictions for museums are relaxed, as was set out by Boris Johnson in his roadmap out of lockdown.

In recent weeks many have speculated over the future of the structure, which was originally built in 1829, when drone pictures appeared on social media.

Many shared their memories of browsing the maritime museum collection, attending late-night raves and family events.

The Fort was built in the 19th century after fears of a Napoleonic invasion using sandstone from the quarries in Runcorn.

It was sold to the Darroch family after it had been decommissioned by the War Office in the 50s.
