Historic Merewether family home listed with $1.8m to $1.85m guide

A Federation-era home built for the daughter of Edward Merewether, the namesake of the beachside suburb, is on the market.

The historic Federation-era home at Adamstown Heights was originally constructed by the Merewether family.

The property, known as Ellecott, at 3 Bulkara Road, Adamstown Heights is for sale with a price guide of $1.8 to $1.85 million through Emily Rees of Laing and Simmons who said the house was built in 1910 for one of Mr Merewether's three daughters.

Edward Merewether was one of the pioneers of Newcastle.

A prominent businessman, former public servant and philanthropist, Merewether once controlled Newcastle's destiny and growth during his 14 years as general superintendent of the Australian Agricultural Company exploiting the region's coal deposits.

Ms Rees said she did not have confirmation as to which of the three Merewether daughters - Mary Eleanor, Augusta Eliza or Mabel Maud - originally owned the house.

The grand property has only changed hands four times in the 112 years since it was constructed.

The four-bedroom home boasts original ornate plasterwork ceilings as well as features such as picture rails, detailed fretwork, leadlight panelling, turret windows, skylights and the original fireplace in the lounge room.

Ms Rees said the home was one of only two in the area up until the 1930s.

"We have old maps from when the developments for the homes surrounding the property were built in the 1930s," she said.

"This home was surrounded by paddocks up until that point. There was only one other home on Brunker Road that was built around the same time as this one."

Current owners Gayle Hopwood and Michael Coote purchased the house seven-and-a-half years ago.

The couple said the home enjoys spectacular views from every vantage point and cool sea breezes year-round from its elevated position.

The property has been updated with an extension in the kitchen and the addition of a heated pool.

Ms Rees said the property had attracted strong interest since going to market, with 34 groups attending two open house inspections.

The house is open for inspection on Saturday at 10am.
