Historic Liverpool pub to be replaced with Home Bargains

Plans for a new Home Bargains on the site of a Liverpool pub have cleared their final hurdle.

Last September, Liverpool Council’s planning committee approved proposals for a large new branch of the shop on Childwall Valley Road in Belle Vale.

Now, the retailer has signed the final legal agreements with the council, enabling the plans to fully go ahead.

It will mean the complete demolition of the Bridge Inn pub, built in the 1930s, as well as some surrounding retail units.

Home Bargains' plans will see a 100-space car park built next to the store.

A report submitted to the council said: "The unit will aim to provide sustainability by providing the height and servicing needed by a modern retail unit along with the efficiency created by a new build unit constructed to current building regulations.

“The proposed unit will comprise some 2273m 2 of the 0.733 hectare site. There are 100 parking spaces proposed including 10 oversized disabled / parent and child parking.”

The new shop will replace the historic Bridge Inn pub, covering a large area on the corner of Childwall Valley Road and King’s Drive.

The neighbouring retail unit housing a William Hill will also be demolished.

According to the Gateacre Society, the Bridge Inn was built in 1938 as a luxurious hotel.

It has been closed for a number of years.

The new branch of Home Bargains is the latest in a string of shops being opened by the retailer across Merseyside.
