Historic landmark building up for sale with an asking price of just under £5m

One of Liverpool's most historic listed buildings is up for sale for nearly £5m.

The former Ark Synagogue, widely known as Greenbank Synagogue, is being marketed as a "development opportunity".

It is being advertised on Facebook's online selling platform Marketplace, with a price tag of £4.9m.

The ad says the landmark building near Sefton Park is in a "strong residential location", and has planning permission to be converted into 52 one and two-bedroom apartments.

The former synagogue on Greenbank Drive has been "at risk" since 2010 and was a focus of the ECHO's Stop the Rot campaign.

Over the years, some emergency work has been carried out to keep the building in a minimum state of good repair, while a suitable occupier was found.

However this hasn't prevented urban explorers gaining access to the site, with footage emerging in 2019 of an urban explorer falling through its old roof.

Previous schemes to convert the building into residential apartments have so far come to nothing.

The Ark Synagogue was once the centre of the city's thriving Jewish community. Among its claims to fame was Clive Epstein - brother of Beatles manager Brian Epstein - marrying his bride there in September 1963, with Merseybeat legends Billy J Kramer and Gerry Marsden in attendance.

The synagogue was built in 1936 and used by its congregation until 2007. The demise of the building as a religious centre was partly due to the falling Jewish population in the city which over the last century went from 11,000 to just 3,000.

Despite being closed, it was given Grade II* listed status to ensure its survival. In 2010, it was put on the "at risk" register by Historic England.

The ad was placed on Marketplace by London-based Charlton Omo-edoh, who describes himself as a self-employed property broker and quantity surveyor. He was reached out to for comment.
