Historic Japanese ship ready for repairs

(Credit: The Yomiuri Shimbun)

The sailing ship Nippon Maru is seen in its entirety for the first time in 20 years as water has been drained from the dock in Yokohama's Minatomirai district where the 88-year-old vessel is moored, so that extensive repair work can be conducted. Built in 1930 as a cadet training vessel, the ship transported coal during World War II and carried demobilized soldiers home shortly after the war. After repainting and other work, the Nippon Maru will be shown to the public again from April. The whole repair process is scheduled to finish shortly before the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.
