Historic Japanese castle damaged as Typhoon Jangmi rips through region

  • Strong winds from Typhoon Jangmi caused damage to parts of the outer wall of Himeji Castle , a 17th-century heritage site and Unesco world heritage site in Hyogo prefecture, western Japan .
  • Approximately four square metres of white plaster reportedly fell from a turret on the northern side of the castle’s main keep, with the damage discovered during a routine inspection.
  • Known as the 'White Heron Castle', the affected turret is recognised as an important cultural property, though no injuries were reported and there was no damage inside the structure.
  • Typhoon Jangmi, which passed through western and eastern Japan with wind speeds exceeding 90kmph in Himeji, also brought heavy rain, flooding, and landslides to several regions, injuring dozens and disrupting transport.
  • Authorities are continuing to assess the extent of the damage to the castle, which last underwent a major restoration between 2009 and 2015, and investigate whether further repairs will be needed.
