Historic "Eire" sign from WWII is restored in Dublin

A Historic WWII sign has been discovered and restored at Hawk Cliff in Dalkey, Dublin.

In the region of 80 of these signs were built along the coastline during the second world war.

They were built in order to warn the Allied and German air-force alike that they were flying over a neutral territory.

The sign was discovered following research undertaken by members of the Dalkey Tidy Towns Committee.

RTE have said: "A team of up to 35 volunteers met once a week for almost six months, painstakingly clearing the site, lifting and cleaning 100 tones of stones, before laying weed killer and returning them."

The sign is one of five that are still visible from the air and has been assigned the number 7.

A sign in Bray was also restored thanks to the help of local volunteers.

These signs are an incredible part of Irish history and deserved to be restored and maintained.
