Historic Edinburgh city centre restaurant named among top gastropubs in the UK

An Edinburgh restaurant has been named one of the very best gastropubs in the UK.

Travel publication Big 7 Travel compiled a list of what it believes to be the 50 best gastropubs across the country and Edinburgh favourite The Doric made the cut.

The Doric, which claims to be Edinburgh's oldest gastropub, dates back to the 17th century - and serves up food such as shepherd's pie and baked vegetable gratin.

The gastropub is located on Market Street, in between the Royal Mile and the Scott Monument.

Big Travel 7 says the The Doric made the Top 50 because of its "homemade and locally sourced dishes".

It added: "A gastropub that dates back to the 17th-century? We’re intrigued, and you should be too.

"The Doric holds claim to being the oldest gastropub in the UK, with homemade and locally sourced dishes on the menu for hundreds of years. Now, it’s a popular spot for local brews and delicious food.

"Expect local dishes such as haggis with a silky Glenkinchie Whisky jus."

Elsewhere on the list, Tom Kitchin's The Scan and Scallie made an appearance for its "focus on super comforting food" and large selection of drinks available.
