Historic Dumfries pub where Queen of the South formed put up for sale

Pub boss George Schneider is selling The New Bazaar after 20 years, due to retirement.

The Dumfries bar is the famous venue where Queen of the South FC was formed and an anniversary plaque outside the premises pays tribute to when their first formal meeting was held there on March 26, 1919.

The New Bazaar, which is being marketed by Glasgow-based surveyors CDLH, has a price tag of offers over £175,000.

Mr Schneider, 69, said: “I have had an enjoyable 20 years there and now that I am turning 70 this year it is time to retire.

“It is with a heavy heart that I am selling the place because I have had a good rapport with the loyal customers and supporters.

“And I would like to thank them for that support over the years.”

Former Queens chairman David Rae unveiled the anniversary plaque in 2009 to mark the 90th anniversary of the first formal meeting of the club at the premises. A stone 100-year anniversary sculpture also adorns an outside wall.

Meanwhile, the water front pub has been advertised with eight or nine bedrooms upstairs facing the River Nith plus a beer garden and outside seating area at the main door.

The bar was formerly a hotel and the surveyors promotional material states: “The premises dates back to 1850 and originally was used by farmers and travelling visitors who arrived by horse and cart.”

A spokesman for CDLH told the Standard: “This is a great opportunity to buy a property with attractive features and heritage.

“It has a bespoke Italian hard work whisky bar top and gantry plus there are many Queen of the South mementoes which are also features of the bar.

“It has genuine potential to improve and develop the offer of the premises to provide food and also develop the premises.

“The property is fresh to the market in the last couple of weeks and we have had a number of viewers with on going interest.”
