Historic Dublin football club's pitch destroyed by 'mindless joyriders'

A historic Dublin football club's pitch has been destroyed by 'mindless joyriders' overnight.

Reckless vandal wrecked the football pitch belonging to Beechill United in Donnybrook overnight, with car marks visible on the carefully maintained grass.

Speaking to Dublin Live, Sinn Fein TD Chris Andrews said that the most recent incident of vandalism is "very frustrating" for all at the club and in the local area.

He said: "It's so very frustrating, and it's not the first time that it has happened with joyriders. I will be speaking to the guards and Dublin City Council about it, we could maybe get the gate to close.

"It's just a shame, the park and the pitch are a great facility and it's a real shame. "

Deputy Andrews added: "It's a completely mindless act of vandalism, it demoralises everybody in the area."

Meanwhile, Beechill United club secretary Sharon Byrne said that this is the third or fourth time that the club's pitch has been damaged.

She said: "It's unreal, this is the third or fourth time that is has happened. I know Dublin City Council is doing its best and we can't be there 24/7 to watch it, it's terrible."

Meanwhile, social media users slammed the vandalism of the beloved pitch.

One user wrote: "This is disgraceful, not fair to all the kids who play football on that pitch."

Another person wrote: "Terrible shame. Absolutely shocking behaviour."

A third person wrote: "A lovely pitch ruined unfairly."
