Historic department store's final closing date is confirmed

The Watt Brothers name will finally disappear when its flagship store in Glasgow closes on Sunday 15 December, it was confirmed today.

The firm which had traded for 104 years will trade for a final week with discounts of up to 70% before its administrators at KPMG close the doors for good. It employed 306 people, 229 of which have already been made redundant.

Watt Brothers is a fourth generation family business which once operated a chain of department stores throughout Scotland but went into administration on 18 October. The company’s 10 leasehold stores closed immediately, while the flagship Sauchiehall Street store has remain open to clear the stock. Buyers for the brand and assets are still being sought.

Joint administrator Blair Nimmo said: "A substantial amount of stock has now been cleared and the remaining staff members continue to work tirelessly to clear all remaining items, with discounts of up to 70% now in place. I want to thank the staff for their efforts in supporting this challenging process. 53 employees remain at the store and we’re working closely with Skills Development Scotland, via their PACE team, to support those who have been made redundant.”
