Historic city centre building to be given new lease of life

Part of a historic retail site in Belfast city centre is set to undergo a major transformation into a luxury accommodation site.

The Castle Buildings on Castle Place are one of the few remaining buildings in the city centre that are reflective of the Victorian era with its iconic cream and green tiling.

The listed building which was once a Mothercare store is to be turned into apartments by Banbridge based construction company DCM Contracts.

Taking to social media, the company stated that they were "delighted" to be involved in the conversion of the building.

A statement on their Facebook page read: "DCM Contracts is delighted to be involved in the transformation of this beautiful listed building in the heart of Belfast City, into luxury apartments.

"We are onsite one month now and getting to know this old building .... and the parking wardens very well!!"

There is currently no information on when the project will be finished or when the apartments will become available to rent or buy.

The Castle Buildings was built in 1905 and extended in 1907 for C. McCullagh and Co as a silk mercers and milliners store and his name remains on the building until this day.

The four-storey site is known as one of the city's finest examples of Art Nouveau architecture with its highly ornate tiling and detailing making it a standout fixture in the city centre.
