Historic cemetery where Karl Marx is buried secures major funding to tackle climate change

  • Highgate Cemetery , the resting place of figures such as Karl Marx and George Michael , has secured a significant £6.7 million grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
  • This funding is part of a wider £19.5 million, five-year initiative to combat climate change impacts, restore neglected areas and enhance public access and community involvement.
  • Key works include installing a new drainage system to address increased winter rainfall, improving paths, removing trees affected by ash dieback and introducing climate-resilient planting.
  • The project will also enhance accessibility, create a new venue in the Dissenters’ Chapel, and undertake conservation work on Grade I-listed features like the Egyptian Avenue and Circle of Lebanon.
  • Repairs to the Grade II* Terrace Catacombs roof will allow public access for the first time in 50 years, offering views of London and a unique contemplative experience.
