Historic C-listed Scottish cinema to be 'brought to life' as pub after buy-out

A SHUTTERED C-listed pub in a Scottish town is set to be “brought back to life” after being bought by a pub chain.

Amber Taverns announced the purchase of the former “Logie Baird” in Helensburgh on Monday.

The pub, which was also formerly known as the “Dapper Dug”, closed down permanently in 2022 and has since sat vacant.

Historically, the property traded as a La Scala cinema until the mid-1980s. It was C-listed by Historic Environment Scotland in 1993, with the body saying: “The former La Scala building is notable for its distinctive Art Deco styling with long narrow pilasters and round-arched pediment to centre adding significant interest to the streetscape.

“The La Scala opened in December 1913, originally seating about 600.”

Amber Taverns said they would renovate and reopen the pub, which would be their 13th in Scotland.

Sam Frankland, the firm’s property director, said: “Helensburgh will be Amber Taverns’ 13th site in Scotland, and we plan to expand further over the next few years.

“We trade from over 180 pubs across the UK, and Scotland remains a key focus for us.

“We have a strong pipeline, and new openings have included Motherwell and Airdrie, with Bathgate due to open its doors in September. We continue to seek new opportunities across the UK.”

Tony Spence, associate director at Christie & Co, who managed the sale process, said: “We are delighted to have acted on behalf of the former owners to sell the property.

“The property will now receive a full refurbishment before opening with a fantastic new offering for the community and visitors to Helensburgh.

“It is always extra special when a vacant property is brought back to life.

“Demand for such opportunities remain high and if you are considering a sale or purchase then we would urge you to get in touch for a no-obligation chat.”

The property freehold was sold at an undisclosed price.
