Historic Butetown building designed for Bute family to be turned into apartments

A historic Cardiff building is set to be turned into apartments. Permission has been granted to convert the Grade II listed building on Mount Stuart Square from offices to aparthotel accommodation.

Cardiff Council has now granted permission for the transformation of the building after a planning application was submitted in 2020. The application proposed to turn part of the ground, first, second and third floors into eight aparthotels.

The four-storey building, known as the Perch Buildings, is based in the historic Mount Stuart Square in Butetown. Constructed in 1855, the square originally housed merchants and sea captains.

However, as the docks rose in prominence and wealthy residents moved out, it became a commercial hub with many properties redeveloped for office use. This change was solidified by the construction of the Coal Exchange building in 1888, but its closure 70 years later has seen the square gradually transition back to its traditional residential use.

The Perch Buildings - number nine on the square - date back to 1858 to the design of Alexander Roos, an architect to the Bute Estate, and was later converted from a domestic building into commercial use. As a Grade-II listed building, the internal works of the building require Listed Building Consent, as the whole of the building, including the inside, is protected.

The aparthotel units range between one and three beds, with an open plan kitchen and living room, bedroom and a bathroom. A one-bed ground-floor apartment is set to look out over the courtyard, while first-floor level accommodation will comprise of three one-bed units, a central two-bed unit and the lower floor of a three-storey three-bed unit.

The Perch Buildings join another Grade-II listed building on Mount Stuart Square set to be converted. St Line House was acquired by Savills from the Welsh Government for £710,000 and is set to be turned into flats.
