Historic building set to become furnished apartments and expansion of TV studios approved

Cardiff council has approved plans to turn the upper floors of the historic Market Chambers in the city centre into furnished apartments and the Great Point Seren Studios is set for another expansion. Other applications that were given the go ahead recently include a proposal to turn a former veterinary clinic into a flat, a change of use of a shop into a pizzeria, and the erection of a temporary school hall.

Here are some of the stand out applications that were approved in Cardiff last week.

City centre

Plans to turn the upper floors of a historic building in Cardiff's city centre into an aparthotel have been granted. The furnished apartments, also known as an aparthotel, will be located at the Grade-II listed Market Chambers, in front of Cardiff Market on St Mary Street, will consist of 52 rooms. You can read more about those plans here. There will be no major changes to the outside of the building and other than a refurbishment of the existing office entrance door and associated side screens, the building will be largely unchanged.

St Mellons

Another expansion of a studio in Cardiff, which has helped bring popular shows such as Sherlock to TV screens, has been given the go ahead. Formerly known as Pinewood Studios Wales, the Great Point Seren Studios on Wentloog Avenue will see a new studio built at the north of the existing site.

A separate planning application for three new studios at the southern end of the site was approved at the end of last year. The fourth studio building is proposed to measure a total area of 1,753 square metres and will be about 15 meters in height. Like the other approved three studio buildings, the fourth will have a green roof to support biodiversity. Other credits connected to the Cardiff studio include Havoc (Netflix), A Discovery of Witches and Industry.

Llanishen

A shop in Llanishen could be set to turn into a new pizzeria. Final Frontier Space Holdings Ltd has had its change of use planning application to turn a clothing store at 9 Llangranog Road into a food and drink unit granted with a view to having a Dusty Knuckle Pizzeria established there.

A covering letter attached to the planning application states: "This proposal relates to the change of use of the unit only. Any relevant signage proposals will be the subject of a separate application in due course."

Fairwater

Plans to erect a temporary school hall to serve Cantonian High whilst a major new school is built has been approved. The temporary school hall will be built at Cantonian High School on Fairwater Road. Fairwater Community Campus will see three schools - Cantonian High, Riverbank Special School and Woodlands High School - combined on a single site

Gabalfa

A proposal to convert a home on North Road into three flats has been approved. The development will see a ground floor and first floor extension and dormer loft conversion built on to 288 North Road. Two of the flats will be located at the rear of building on the ground and first floors. The second will be a maisonette flat at the front of the first and second floor.

The former Heath Vets branch on Whitchurch Road is another property in Gabalfa which will be turned into accommodation. Cardiff council has given planning consent for the ground floor of the building to be turned into a flat. Heath Vets announced on social media in March 2020 that they were closing their Whitchurch Road branch.
