Historic Bristol pub could be turned into flats and commercial space

New owners of a historic pub in Bristol which closed this year have unveiled their plans for the building.

The Black Boy Inn on Whiteladies Road closed in May and has since been taken on by Bristol-based property developers Chatford Properties.

The traditional boozer was previously owned by the Ei Group, formerly known as Enterprise Inns, before the major company sold it to Chatford in January for £495,000

A spokesperson for the Ei Group would not reveal why they decided to sell the pub when contacted by Bristol Live.

The sale was handled by Nicholas Calfe, director at estate agents Christie & Co, who said: "This is the first time the pub has been on the market for many years as a freehold sale.

"We saw high levels of interest from a range of potential buyers, due to its desirable location and huge opportunity to develop the building in order to maximise the return on the investment required.”

Although plans for the watering hole are currently only in the embryonic stages, a spokesperson for Chatford Properties revealed their intentions to Bristol Live - and it sounds like it will not be reopening as a pub.

They said: “We are hoping to create a mixed use for the property with commercial and residential elements subject to obtaining planning consent.

"A pub or bar is a possibility but that use hasn’t proved viable in recent years with the last pub operator closing down.

"There are 12 other pubs within half a mile which is probably an oversupply for current demand.”

Legend has it that The Black Boy Inn was named after King Charles II, whose skin pigment was very dark, hence his nickname was the 'Black Boy'.

It is thought the Grade ll pub gave the nearby area its common - although not official - name of Blackboy Hill.
