Historic bridge wrecked by Storm Dennis staying shut as experts ponder 'long term' options

A historic bridge wrecked in the aftermath of Storm Dennis is going to stay shut while the damage is assessed.

Pieces of the Teddy Bear Bridge in Ystradgynlais, Powys, crumbled away following high water levels during the weekend storm.

Residents said they were "concerned" about the the bridge after The Met Office issued a  new yellow weather warning for heavy rain and flooding this week.

Powys County Council  has closed the footbridge and adjacent road "for safety reasons".

Council engineers have been on site to assess the damage and temporary flood defences have been added, however, long-term options to preserve the bridge are being investigated.

A spokesman for Powys County Council said: "A footbridge and road have been closed in Ystradgynlais for safety reasons after part of the structure collapsed following Storm Dennis.

"Powys County Council have closed Teddy Bear Bridge and adjacent road after part of the bridge support, which crosses the River Tawe, suffered structural damage.

"Engineers from the council are currently on site assessing the damage and have installed temporary flood defences. Natural Resources Wales and residents are being updated on the incident and safety closure.

"Safety work to support the bridge will be carried as soon as conditions allow work to take place and engineers are investigating long-term options."
