Historic black and white photos show the Queen as a child and young adult

The Queen celebrates her 93rd birthday this weekend. Unlike everyone else in Britain, the Queen marks her birthday on two separate days each year.

The first is the actual day she was born (on April 21) and the second 'official' birthday falls on the second Saturday in June – this year it falls on June 8. You can read all about exactly why Her Majesty celebrates two birthdays here.

In celebration of her birthday this Sunday, we took a look back at Her Royal Highness' early years, with a candid photo series showing the then Princess Elizabeth as a child with her younger sister, the late Princess Margaret, as well as her parents.

They include this adorable snap taken in May 1928 showing the then Princess Elizabeth as a toddler waving from a carriage.

Fans of The Crown TV series will no doubt appreciate this photo of Princess Elizabeth and Lt Philip Mountbatten just after their wedding ceremony at Buckingham Palace in 1947.
