Historic 1840s former bank in Edinburgh to be turned into six new flats

Proposals to transform a former George Street bank dating back to the 1840s into luxury flats have been given the green light.

Edinburgh council have approved plans by owner Mitchells and Butlers Plc to convert the first, second and third floors of the historic building into new homes.

The A-listed building has been vacant for more than 20 years apart from an All Bar One on the ground floor.

According to plans seen by Edinburgh Live, the proposals are for "five two-bedroom four person flats and one two-bedroom three person flat."

The property's impressive Graeco-Roman frontage is set to remain with special considerations given to them due to the "sensitive nature of this building".

Photos taken of the spacious upper floors reveal they retain many original features, including large bay windows and Doric plaster reliefs.

Planning documents added: "The proposals for conversion and change of use to flats will ensure its long term use and that it will be kept in good repair. There is a need for this type of residential accommodation close to the city centre and this will be sustainable in terms of avoiding traffic movements due to local facilities and transport network.

"It is understood that marketing of the upper floor area has taken place since Mitchells and Butlers acquired the property.

"Mitchells and Butlers have a portfolio of flat developments which they have carried out in various locations, with many of them involving successful and sensitive conversions above their trade areas, in Listed Buildings such as this."
