Historic, 1800s listed Edinburgh mansion to be turned into plush contemporary apartments

Plans have been submitted to turn a listed mansion into flats.

The plans would see B-listed Kirklands House, on Edinburgh's western outskirts, converted into 11 brand new apartments.

Crew Architects and Newcrest Residential have proposed the demolition of modern extensions and their replacement with a new build addition while retaining the original 1868 mansion, lodge and gardens.

The present house was originally named Kirklands Lodge. It was built on the site of an earlier house named Kirkland Cottage. The name Kirkland may be derived from the site belonging to the mediaeval kirk of Gogar: the name first appeared in 1570.

In a planning statement Crew wrote: "Careful consideration has been made to both north and south elevations to ensure the interface with the existing building is sensitively resolved with the new building ‘set back’ and reduced in scale to form a more respectful relationship than present. "

Improvements to the listed building include replacing clay roof tiles with salvaged slate and replacement sash and case windows.

Meanwhile the new elements are described as 'contemporary' apart from a traditionally styled lodge at the entrance to the property - all finished in local buff stone, seamed metal cladding/roofing and natural slate.

The architects have said their plans would allow for greater visibility of the original house than is currently allowed by the modern extensions.
