Historic 175-year-old Dublin building the Old Courthouse in Howth to be refurbished becoming 'central tourist spot'

One of Dublin's most historic buildings is set for a facelift making it a "central spot for tourist information".

The Old Courthouse in Howth, which has existed since 1845, is to be refurbished over the next six months.

The project will allow greater public use of the 175-year-old building and improve access to the historic structure.

It will see the building getting a new entrance courtyard which will have a ramp to allow universal access.

There is also plans for a landscaped courtyard with seating overlooking the harbour area.

Fingal County Council brought up the proposed refurbishment in March 2018 with the iconic building being seen as a historical landmark by the council.

Mayor of Fingal, Cllr. Eoghan O’Brien said: "The refurbishment of the Courthouse in Howth is welcome news and is much needed for such an important historic site. It is also great to see that it will remain an important community space to use for the residents of Howth as well as a central spot for tourists."

Tolmac Construction Ltd has been chosen as the main contractor for the refurbishment project.

The Fingal Tourism Tourist information office will be relocated to the building and the main hall will be retained as a community space, once renovations are complete.

AnnMarie Farrelly, Chief Executive of FCC said: "The refurbishment works of the Courthouse in Howth is another example of our continued commitment to investing in the heritage of Fingal."
