Historian believes White House run by Trump in 2024 marks end of democracy

A presidential historian believes Trump will bring civil war to America if he attempts a third presidential run in 2024.

Jon Meacham, a former speechwriter for Joe Biden, appeared on CNN’s Fareed Zakaria’s show over the weekend to make the controversial comments.

Meacham said as Democrats continue to fight for voting rights legislation, Trump will cry foul play and claim he won, even if the results say otherwise.

Meacham is a historian, presidential biographer, Pulitzer Prize winning writer and expert in US politics.

When presenter Zakaria asked: “Doesn't that present us with a constitutional crisis?” Meacham said: “I think it's an unfolding one.”

On the insurrection that took place at the Capitol on 6 January, Meacham said the riot was the closest America came to losing democracy since the Civil War.

He said: “I think we came as close to losing the Constitution… that day as we have since Fort Sumter.”

Another historian joined the panel to discuss voting rights in America.

Doris Kearns Goodwin - a political commentator and Pulitzer Prize winner - said securing voting rights and a peaceful transition of power is “the fight of our life right now.”

Goodwin’s comments come in light of the continued fight by state legislatures to overturn elections meaning every election could potentially be contested.
