His Dark Materials: What is it about?

His Dark Materials season 1 is based on the first novel in the trilogy, entitled Northern Lights (or The Golden Compass in the US), and is set on a parallel Earth that is different yet similar to our own.
It follows orphan girl Lyra Belacqua (Dafne Keen) as she becomes caught up in a war of wills between her revolutionary explorer uncle, Lord Asriel (James McAvoy), and the all-powerful Magisterium.
Humans in Lyra's world also have their souls exist as companions outside of their bodies as creatures known as Daemons.
For children, these Daemons can shapeshift but when the children come of age, the Daemon selects a single form to remain as.
Lyra finds her life changed forever when she meets the glamorous and icy Mrs Coulter (Ruth Wilson), with a link to Lord Asriel's past.
