Donald Trump and his MAGA cronies have spent the last month crowing over revelations that Joe Biden was in severe cognitive decline throughout the latter half of his presidency. But maybe they should be wary of throwing stones in glass houses, as there’s mounting evidence that the 78-year-old Trump is also not playing with a full deck of cards.
Doctors have long opined that his rambling speeches, delusions of grandeur, inability to stay on topic, and odd word salads are indications that he’s suffering some kind of dementia. Even in his first presidency, Trump was pressured to undergo cognitive tests, frequently boasting that he “aced” them.
But now it appears he may not even know what’s being done in his name. At yesterday’s White House press briefing, he was quizzed about his administration’s headline-dominating pause on all foreign student visa applications. This is a major news story, but disturbingly, Trump appeared not to know anything about it:

This raises the specter that Trump is merely an easily manipulated figurehead who’ll sign whatever his MAGA cronies put in front of him. Is Stephen Miller just whispering into Trump’s ear and really running the country?
The evidence is piling up

This comes on the heels of an extremely odd speech to graduating cadets at West Point over the weekend that went off-topic even by Trump standards. Rather than talk about military service, he instead mumbled about golf and “trophy wives”, delivering a meandering and irrelevant anecdote about real-estate developer Bill Levitt:
“He ended up getting a divorce, found a new wife. Could you say a trophy wife? I guess we can say a trophy wife. But that doesn’t work out too well, I must tell you, a lot of trophy wives, it doesn’t it work.”
The baffled cadets were left side-eyeing each other as they processed that this confused old man has his finger on the nuclear button.
Dr Jennifer Mercieca sounds fairly confident that something is up, saying to The Daily Beast, “His lack of focus makes it seem as though he’s experiencing cognitive decline, that his brain is not well-disciplined, and he’s unable to maintain a thought and carry it through to a logical conclusion.”
Need I remind you that we are still only a few months into the four-year Trump presidency. So, if he’s like this now, imagine the kind of word salads he’ll be serving up after another few years in office?
