Hinch denies being drunk after ending up in hospital with 'slight brain trauma' from fall

Derryn Hinch, who had a liver transplant in 2011, said he had two glasses of wine before the fall.

Federal senator Derryn Hinch has been hospitalised after a fall from an Uber in Melbourne.

Senator Hinch, 74, said he spent Monday night at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne after being diagnosed with what he called "slight brain trauma" from the tumble on St Kilda Road.

"Thank goodness the Uber driver and a passer-by called an ambulance which was here in four minutes," he told reporters on Thursday.

"I was unconscious, knocked out, [with a] big lump on the back of my head.

"The next thing I knew, I was in The Alfred Hospital with lots of tubes coming out of me and metal studs on me for the heart."

Senator Hinch, who had a liver transplant in 2011, said he had two glasses of wine at dinner on Monday.

"Was I pissed? No I wasn't," he told Sky News.

"I'd had two glasses of wine with my dinner guest that night at their house and I came home and it all happened outside my house. I drink occasionally and I'm not stupid."

'You've got to live your life'

Senator Hinch was released from hospital on Tuesday but was due to return to have a heart monitor fitted. He said he was feeling "fine".

"I didn't have a drink for five years. I swore I would never drink again but you've got to live your life," he said.

"I'm very appreciative to the family of my donor and I've met them many times over the years … I'm eternally grateful for it [the transplant]."
