Himanta Biswa Sarma’s son Nandil Biswa Sarma completes Ironman Vietnam: The journey from Doon School to global endurance race

Nandil Biswa Sarma, the son of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is in the news for completing the gruelling Vietnam Challenge on May 10, completing the 3.8 km swim, 180km cycle and 42.2 km run in approximately 16 hours. Nandil is currently pursuing law at the National Law School of India University in Bengaluru.

Nandil Sarma clears Ironman event

In a big achievement, Nandil Biswa Sarma cleared the Vietnam Ironman event, considered one of the toughest endurance competitions in the world. Taking to X, the Assam chief minister wrote, “On 10 May, my son Nandil, currently in his fifth year at the National Law School of India University in Bengaluru, took on this extraordinary challenge at Ironman Vietnam. After just 7-8 months of preparation, he completed the challenge in approximately 16 hours.”

“As a father, it fills me with immense pride to see his discipline, determination and perseverance. I wish him the very best for the journey ahead and for many more milestones in life,” he added.

He clinched Ironman 70.3 in Bahrain too

In December last year, Nandil Sarma finished the coveted Ironman 70.3 race in Bahrain. The challenging triathlon event-a 1.9 km swim, 90 km cycling segment, and a 21.1 km run-was joined by leading athletes from across the globe.

Nandil completed the race in 6 hours and 48 minutes, and he prepared for only 3-4 months. His achievement has drawn widespread admiration, with CM Sarma expressing immense pride in the dedication and spirit of his son.

Who is Nandil Sarma?

Nandil Biswa Sarma is the son of the Assam chief minister Himanta Sarma. After completing his Class 12 education in 2019 from The Doon School, he enrolled in at the National Law School of India University in Bengaluru. At that time, Himanta Sarma had shared a photo of him and his family dropping off Nandil at the college hostel at National Law School of India University (NLSIU or simply NLS). The photo shows the Assam chief minister with his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, his son Nandil and daughter Sukanya. Nandil reportedly dropped a year to prepare for law school entrance exams.

On Twitter, Himanta Biswa Sarma had written: "Nandil has started a new journey of his life from this hostel room today. We just dropped him in the law School with lots of blessings."

The chief minister had also shared a video of Nandil's speech as School Captain of the Doon School in the year 2019. In his speech, Nandil spoke of his journey from a small boy from the Northeast who was "too scared to step out of the dormitory" to becoming the school captain.

Plan to step into politics soon?

He had said he would not be joining active politics in Assam anytime soon. He made the remarks in March when election campaigns were in full swing in Assam, putting to rest speculation about a possible political entry.

Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier said that he did not want his son to follow in his footsteps and join politics. It is good for him he stays away from politics as much as possible," Sarma was quoted as saying by The Times of India. "I do not want my son to step into in this world... the challenges we have faced, I don't think they'll be able to face such challenges."
