A HILLWALKER has died while climbing a mountain on the King's estate in Aberdeenshire.
The man, believed to be in his 50s, was climbing Lochnagar on the Balmoral Estate at the weekend when they suffered a suspected heart attack.
Members of Braemar Mountain Rescue Team were called out on Saturday, but the man was reportedly pronounced dead on the mountain.
Malcolm MacIntyre, operations manager of Braemar MRT, said: “Unfortunately, he had suffered a fatal heart attack about a third of the way up.
“The man was with a couple of friends but sadly he passed away. We packaged him up for the coastguard helicopter from Inverness to extract the body. We would like to pass on our condolences to his family and friends.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 10.45am on Saturday, 24 May, 2025, we were made aware of a 56-year-old man having taken unwell near Lochnagar, Ballater.
“Emergency services attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.”
