Hillwalker dies after falling ill on Pentland Hills near Edinburgh

A hillwalker has died after falling ill on a Pentland Hills trail near Edinburgh.

Paramedics and a mountain rescue team were called to an area near the Hillend snow sports centre on Friday.

The male hillwalker was pronounced dead at the scene, and Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue helped to recover his body from the very steep trail where he had been found.

Ropes were used to lower his stretcher to the foot of the hill.

The hill walker's age has not been released, and it's not currently known if he was walking with friends or what his cause of death was.

He is understood to have suffered a "significant medical issue."

Team leader Dave Wright said it had been a "very sad week" for the mountain rescue team, as the latest incident came shortly before a body was found in the search for Ross Taylor's family lead tributes after body found in woods.

The rescue team had been involved in extensive searches for the 30-year-old father after he went missing from his home in Mayfield.

Describing the incident in the Pentlands, Mr Wright told Edinburgh Live: "The Scottish Ambulance Service had been called to a casualty who was unfortunately deceased when they arrived. Our brief was to assist with the recovery of the hillwalker.

"The concern was the slope was very steep, we were called to use specialist equipment."

He said the team had been busy in recent weeks with other call-outs.

On Thursday, a mountain biker became lost above the snow line in the Pentland Hills, but was fortunately able to make his way to a local farmhouse as the rescue team was forming up.

Mr Wright urged everyone  walking in the hills to be aware of their limits and always set out with a fully charged mobile phone.
