Hillsborough Forest play park opens after £1.5m revamp

A £1.5 million play park has opened in Co Down.

Hillsborough Forest play park has paths for disabled access, nearby fishing spots and a tractor and aeroplane in homage to local inventor Harry Ferguson.

Lagan Valley MLA Minister Edwin Poots said outdoor spaces were key to keeping healthy in lockdown.

He said: "This one [park] is very, very well utilised and I have absolutely no doubt there will be many tens of thousands of people will use this over the course of the next couple of months."

Natasha Ferson has already brought her son Sebastian to the new park.

She said: "We know we're going to get so much fun out of it. This is just the best area, it's so accessible to everybody.

Lisburn and Castlereagh  Alderman Jim Dillon said the upgrades had already bumped up visitor numbers.

He added: "This new play park represents £2 million worth of investment for children as Stage One of the council's wider plan to develop Hillsborough Forest.

"A new 145 space car park and improvements to pathways and signage will make sure visiting is a pleasant experience for parents and children."

The revamp was funded by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs and Lisburn and Castlereagh Council.

The development will now move into its second stage.
