Hillington Industrial Estate warehouse being converted into morgue amid coronavirus crisis

A warehouse in Hillington Industrial Estate, on the outskirts of Glasgow, is being converted into a morgue amid the coronavirus crisis.

After a location within Hillington had been reported by Sky News, Glasgow City Council this evening confirmed to Glasgow Live work is ongoing following identification of a 'temporary body storage facility', which will have the capacity for 1,700 caskets - if required.

A council spokesperson said: "Like all local authorities across the UK, Glasgow and key partners - including NHSGGC - has looked at various options for dealing with increased deaths.

"We are monitoring on a daily basis the impact of COVID-19, including potential requirements for a temporary body storage facility.

"As part of this planning, a site has been identified and we are working towards making this facility ready for use should it be needed."

It's understood the facility may be ready for use as early as the start of next week, if it is deemed necessary, in response to the covid-19 outbreak.
