Hillhouse charity moves into former JH Donald building in Kilmarnock town centre

A children's charity has taken over the premises that once housed JH Donald.

The iconic Kilmarnock shop is now home to Hillhouse - a social enterprise venture that aids individuals and families facing financial hardship.

The charity has two shops in the town - one for furniture and another for clothing.

Hillhouse's former furniture store was based at the old Mothercare unit on the corner of King Street.

The furniture shop was forced to close as part of council plans to demolish retail units on King Street.

The clothes shop the charity operates, also on King Street, remains open on the opposite side of the street.

The charity posted on their Facebook page: "We are delighted to announce that our new furniture and household shop is now open!"

"Please come and visit us at 7-11 Titchfield Street, Kilmarnock. (Old JH Donald building).

"Our shop at 121 King Street which previously sold furniture is now closed and our clothes and children’s shop at 122 King Street is still open as usual.

"Barbara and Margo were our first customers this morning and were delighted with our new look shop. Please pop in and support your local charity!"

Ayrshire electrical goods firm JH Donald collapsed in November 2017 with 32 workers losing their jobs.

The company's roots went back to 1952 with stores in Kilmarnock, Hurlford, Irvine, and Ayr all closing almost two years ago.

The Kilmarnock shop was iconic for a great number of people in the area because of its prominent position in the town centre.

Driving round the one-way system, it was one of the first shops you could see and was fondly remembered for having a digital clock displaying the time.
