Hilbre Island closed to visitors due to "significant public risk" after cave fire

A popular Wirral beauty spot will remain closed to visitors until the weekend.

Emergency services were called to Hilbre Island, off West Kirby on Friday evening (August 23) after black smoke was seen billowing out of the cave at around 7.30pm.

The Wirral Coastguard and Rescue team confirmed that the fire is now out, after visiting the site this morning with Wirral council and Merseyside Fire and Rescue.

However, the island will remain out of bounds until at least Saturday, August 31st, due to the instability of the cave and cliff.

Cordons will remain in place throughout the week.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by Merseyside Fire and Rescue.

Visitors can still make the trip to Middle Eye and Little Eye, smaller neighbouring islands, as they are still accesible.

Cave fire on Hilbre Island

In a Facebook post this morning Wirral Coastguard and Rescue team said: "Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team and Wirral Council have attended Hilbre Island again this morning with Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service who have assessed the fire.

"The fire that was burning within the cave at the North West side of the island is now out however significant public risk still remains due to the instability of the cave and the cliff.

"Based off the severe public risk, Wirral Council have decided that Hilbre Island will remain closed to the public until at least Saturday 31st August 2019.

"Cordons will remain in place throughout the week and we would kindly ask members of the public to not make any attempt to breach cordons.

"The cause of the fire is still under investigation by Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service.

"Middle Eye and Little Eye are fully accessible.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause."
