Hilarious hospital rules for new mums in the 1960s - and they were very strict

All hospitals have their own rules and regulations to follow, procedures which ensure patients get better and people have a pleasant stay.

But how different were those rules 50 years ago?

It's fair to say they were very different from today, especially when it came to new mums.

A woman named Micala Henson from the US recently stumbled across a set of hospital rules when going through some of her mother's things and couldn't resist uploading her find to Facebook .

Her fellow mums had a good laugh at a few of the bizarre stipulations set out for women who had just given birth.

Micala, a parent herself, saw the funny side of the document.

She wrote: "My mom was going through her things and we saw this, it's rules in regards to just having a baby. It gave me a chuckle.

"How things have changed! This is from 1968! How cool! Thank goodness things have changed, I can't imagine! Feel free to share!"

Her post has since gone viral, being shared over 7,000 times and garnered almost 2,000 comments.

Among the bizarre rules, the document reveals what times babies would be on display for visitors to look at and when the baby will be fed.

These times are strict and there seems no room for amendments.

As well as this, it clearly states that there is to be no one in the room with the mother while she is nursing the baby - not even the father of the child.

People especially enjoyed this rule, with one fellow mum commenting: "Wow! Heaven forbid your husband be in the room while you nurse your baby - oh no! He might see your breasts!"

There were also specific instructions for how long the mother should breast feed the baby (five minutes only during the first 24 hours, which goes up to seven minutes on the second and third day).

And while nursing there were a number of foods the mum wasn't allowed to eat, including chocolate, raw apple, strawberries, cherries, cabbage, onions and green coconut cake.

Many women were shocked by the rules, with someone replying: "Lol... How does this document actually exist in the first place?"

Another person said: "Bloody hell, like a prison!"

A third added: "Poor babies! I would have failed at this big time."
