Hiking route one hour from Edinburgh named one of the world's best by CNN

An infamous trail through the Scottish Borders is ranked number one by an international travel series.

On Monday, CNN Travel released a list of the world's 23 best hiking trails, listing the UK's Pennine Way as number one.

The series dubbed the 268 mile trail as "one for outdoor fanatics, camping enthusiasts and anyone who can handle the vagaries of great British weather."

Starting in the Scottish Borders town of Kirk Yetholm in Jedburgh, the trail begins just 50 miles South East of Edinburgh. Then it winds its way along the Scottish border. The trail eventually takes hikers past the famous Hadrian's wall before plunging south through the Yorkshire Dales to reach the Derbyshire Peak District and the wild moorlands east of Manchester.

CNN Travel called the trail the "United Kingdom's most famous long distance path," and National Trails described the path as "hilly and in places remote."

"The length of trail which is still persistently wet is much reduced from what some walkers experienced in the past, but you should be prepared to spend time on at least a few days traversing wet peat bogs. If the weather has been good then you may well get away with dry socks, but it wouldn’t be the Pennine Way if wet socks were no longer a hazard," National Trails warned on Pennine Way website.

Highlights of the trail include the Hardraw Force, England`s largest single drop waterfall, the Kinder Scout moorland plateau, Malham Cove natural limestone Amphitheatre, Pen-y-ghent peak, and many more peaks, waterfalls, and natural delights.

Small towns, charming pubs and warm inns also line the trail and offer respite for both shorter trips and long haul hikes.

It is estimated that 150,000 people use the trail each year, but less than 2,000 people a year walk the entire 268-mile route.

Trekkers completing the whole Pennine Way typically take three weeks to walk from XXX to Kirk Yetholm, but the route is also great for shorter trips and day hikers.
