Hiker 'narrowly misses' bagging 184th Scots Munro after snapping ankle near peak of mountain

A hiker who was only 100 meters away from bagging her 184th Scots Munro had to be saved by mercy crews after she snapped her ankle just 15 minutes from the summit.

Bekah Cork had been scaling Sgurr nan Coireachan in the Highlands before the horror fall on Saturday afternoon.

Despite the good conditions, the 32-year-old found herself lying in a heap and screaming after slipping on the path just moments away from the top.

Lochaber Mountain Rescue Teams scrambled to rescue the hillwalker, where it soon emerged she had broken and dislocated her ankle.

Bekah - who now requires surgery for her injuries - told the Record: "We were really close to the summit then the next thing I knew, I had hit the ground and I was screaming - it felt like I had moved out of myself.

"The conditions were great, I just slipped and fell. I was walking on a really flat part of the path and must have hit a bit of mud.

"My leg suddenly went, I heard a crack and I fell to the floor. My friend ahead initially thought I was a seagull from the noise I was making.

"I knew there was a problem and I definitely did not want to look at my leg."

Bekah, from Oxford, has thanked the rescue crews who arrived at the scene just one hour after receiving the alarm.

She has warned other hikers to be prepared with equipment for "sticky situations".

She said: "They were amazing. At one point, when the drugs wore off, I started crying because I felt a bit silly for falling, even though I didn't plan it!

"While we never set out expecting to need their help, we try to be prepared so that if we do end up in a sticky situation we know what to do.

"I would advise packing a power-bank, a charged phone and even a torch in case you are left waiting for help in the dark.

"I was really, really lucky, but it could have been a lot worse and had we not been prepared, had the weather been bad or had to wait longer things, could have been really different."

And, despite the ordeal, the brave hiker plans to return to the Highlands to complete the Munro.

She added: "I was 15 minutes away from the peak and narrowly missed bagging my 184th Munro - I'll definitely be back to finish it!"

Lochaber Mountain Rescue team have been approached for comment.
