Hiker dies in Grand Canyon as region faces extreme heat

  • A 67-year-old man from Alvarado, Texas, died on Tuesday whilst hiking the South Kaibab Trail in the Grand Canyon, Arizona.
  • The hiker was found unresponsive around 11:50 am after reportedly turning back from Skeleton Point, with resuscitation attempts by bystanders and park personnel proving unsuccessful.
  • He was attempting a 15-mile round trip to the Colorado River and Phantom Ranch, a challenging route typically taking two days.
  • Park officials warned of extreme summer heat in the canyon, where temperatures can exceed 49°C (120°F), advising against hiking between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • This incident follows a similar death on the same trail last July and underscores the dangers of extreme heat, with the region currently under an extreme heat warning.
