Hiker dead in Blue Mountains after fall

A 60-year-old man has died after falling from a walking trail in the NSW Blue Mountains. (AAP)

A male hiker has died in the NSW Blue Mountains after a fall, with authorities needing 24 hours to extract his body from bushland.

The 60-year-old fell at Blue Drum Creek at Wentworth Falls about 2.45pm on Saturday and was seriously injured. He was hiking in a group at the time.

He later died at the scene, NSW Police said in a statement.

It's understood that with the hikers in a remote area of the mountains and due to the rugged terrain, Saturday's rescue mission had to be postponed until morning.

The man's body was located and recovered from the scene with assistance from PolAir about 3pm on Sunday.
