Hijacker 'threw woman to ground' before making off in her car in Belfast

A woman was thrown to the ground in a car hijacking in Belfast, police say.

The victim was targeted for her Fiat 500 shortly before midnight outside a fast food takeaway near the Ormeau Road junction with Fitzroy Avenue.

Police said they recovered the car shortly before 3am on Friday morning in the north of the city.

Detective Sergeant Rachel Miskelly said: “As she was exiting the vehicle a man approached and threw her to the ground before getting into the car and driving off city-wards at speed.

"Following a number of enquiries the car was recovered shortly before 3am parked in the street at Fairhill Park in North Belfast and has been taken for examination.

"The woman sustained cuts and bruising as a result of the incident.

SDLP Botanic Councillor Gary McKeown said: “I am very concerned about the hijacking that took place on the Ormeau Road last night.

"I'm sure this was very shocking and upsetting for the woman whose car was taken, especially given how she sustained injuries in the incident, and my thoughts are with her.

"People need to be able to go about their daily business without fear of becoming victims of incidents like this, and I would urge anyone with any information to please make contact with the PSNI or Crimestoppers.”

Det Sgt Miskelly added: “Anyone with any information about this incident or who may be able to help with our investigation, is asked to call detectives at Musgrave on the non-emergency number 101 quoting reference number 6 10/07/20, or submit a report online using our non-emergency reporting form via  http://www.psni.police.uk/makeareport/.

"You can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at  http://crimestoppers-uk.org/."
