Hijab row: Beauty is not meant to be kept hidden, says Kerala governor

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Even as the Hijab row is making ripples across the country, governor Arif Mohammed Khan said that history showed Muslim women being against Hijab even during the time of the Holy Prophet, and had argued that beauty is not meant to be kept hidden.

Responding to the issue in New Delhi on Friday, the governor referred a story from Islam to justify his views. “A young girl, who was brought up in the household of the Prophet himself and was the niece of his wife, was proverbially beautiful. When her husband chided her for not wearing a veil, she said God has made me beautiful. God has placed the stamp of beauty on me. I want people to see my beauty and see the grace of God in my beauty. Be thankful to God that God has made me so beautiful. This is how the women of the first generation behaved. That is all I can say,” he said.

Later, he told national media that who wears what, is their individual choice, but when students join educational institutions they know that they have a dress code to follow. The row erupted when the Karnataka government banned students wearing Hijab in government schools and colleges in Karnataka. The issue snowballed into a major controversy, with several opinions in favour of and against the anti-Hijab order.
