Highways England update on M5 accident and road closure causing heavy traffic on M4

All lanes on the M5 will soon be reopened following a serious crash at the Almondsbury Interchange earlier this morning (October 29).

A car and motorcycle were involved in the collision, which took place near J15 on the M5 at around 6.30am.

The M4 link roads to the M5 have been closed completely in both directions as a result of the crash, leading to heavy congestion on the motorway.

Emergency services attended the scene, with South Western Ambulance Service confirming that three people were taken to hospital.

Highways England has now confirmed all carriageways are being reopened but added it may take 'some time' for the traffic to clear.

A spokesperson for the agency said on Twitter: "Update: Access to M5 southbound from M4 at #AlmondsburyIntechange.

"We are now in the process of reopening all carriageways after the earlier serious collision.

"Please note it may take some time for the congestion the clear. Thank you for your patience."

An ambulance spokeswoman said: "We were called at 6.43am to reports of a road traffic collision.

"We have attended with 3 ambulances, HART (hazardous area response team), an Operations Officer and a critical care team.

"Three patients have been taken to hospital for further treatment."
