Highways England says it 'cannot reopen' lane on Clifton Bridge as planned

Highways England has announced that it "cannot reopen" the eastbound lane on Clifton Bridge as previously planned.

Engineers were unable to complete the construction of a safety barrier on Tuesday evening, February 11.

One lane on the eastbound bridge, which has been completely closed since February 6, was due to reopen at 9.30pm after the Nottingham Forest vs Charlton Athletic game at the City Ground.

A spokesman for Highways England said: "We have been unable to complete safety barrier installation and therefore cannot reopen a lane this evening as previously hoped.

"We know this is causing extreme inconvenience for all road users in the Nottingham area but safety remains our priority.

"We are still working to open a lane on eastbound A52 as soon as it is safe to do so. Further updates will be posted when the information becomes available."

Traffic coming from the Forest game will now have to follow the existing diversion which has been in place for the past six days.

The closures come after corroded steel work and damaged concrete was found on the underside of the bridge.

Nottingham City Council added: "Disappointing this wasn't possible to achieve tonight. We hope NFFC and CAFC fans get home safely after the match."

A city-wide plan is in place to reduce congestion, and you can follow all the latest updates in the live blog here.
