Highways England reveals when it hopes to reopen one lane of A52 at Clifton Bridge

Plans are being put in place to reopen one lane on Clifton Bridge this afternoon (Wednesday, February 12).

The eastbound bridge, which opened in 1972, has been completely closed for seven days after damaged steel work and concrete was found during a routine inspection on February 6.

Upon opening up the concrete, engineers found the steel cables on the far left of the bridge had corroded, and Highways England made the call to shut the road.

Speaking to Nottinghamshire Live, Highways England regional director Catherine Brookes said they are planning to reopen one lane "as far over to the right" as possible.

"We are aiming to open one lane this afternoon," she said.

"That lane will be as far over to the right-hand side. The area that we have found to be damaged is over to the left-hand side, so we are keeping traffic as far away from that as possible.

"There will be barriers down both sides so it will be clear to people. They will not be able to go over."

Highways England had planned to reopen one lane eastbound after the Nottingham Forest vs Charlton game finished on Tuesday, February 11, but engineers were unable to complete the construction of a safety barrier in time.

Pictures have now shown the work being done as engineers aim to get the lane back open by this afternoon, although an exact time has not been given.

This will allow traffic to travel towards Clifton, the A453 and the M1.

The Queens Drive slip road will remain closed, alongside three other lanes on the left.

Measures have also been put in place to help traffic and transport, including council and police officers being placed at key junctions across the city for the rest of the week, and a number of temporary road closures.
