Highways England issue update on work to slash traffic at busy M62 junction

Work to cut traffic queues at junction 28 of the M62 junction has finished - with extra lanes added on the east and westbound slip roads.

At Tingley's junction 28 the westbound exit slip road has been extended from three lanes to four - while the eastbound slip road has been widened to three lanes.

However there may be some overnight closures in the next few weeks while finishing touches are carried out.

Highways England hope the upgrades will reduce emission levels and boost air quality by improving traffic flows and reducing congestion.

The work comes just weeks after the improvements at junction 27 were finished - which saw westbound exit slip roads from the M62 and M621 increased to three lanes to provide extra room on the southern roundabout.

'We've addressed the important issue of congestion'

Highways England project manager Esref Ulas said: “The completion of these major schemes will improve safety and ease congestion for drivers who use these busy junctions.

“We’ve addressed the important issue of congestion which had an impact on drivers, and I want to thank people for their patience.”

Leeds City Council chief officer for highways and transportation Gary Bartlett said: “Leeds City Council is very pleased to have worked with Highways England to deliver these upgrades to the two junctions on the M62 - which will improve safety levels and help to cut congestion.

“This has been a significant project and the council would like to thank everyone involved including local residents living close by the work and motorists for their patience while the work was carried out.”

Road markings and signs have also been improved and replaced and resurfacing has been carried out on the roundabouts and slip roads at both junctions.
