Miles of roadworks will be lifted or completed in time for the big Bank Holiday getaway.
About 480 miles will be finished or temporarily suspended on motorways and other major routes to help motorists hitting the road for the August Bank Holiday weekend.
Highways England will remove the roadworks by early on Friday, August 23, to help people get away with as little disruption as possible.
It claims almost 97 per cent of England’s strategic road network, will be free from roadworks over the August bank holiday period. To help motorists, Highways England is lifting 75 miles of work and completing 411 miles of projects for the holiday.
Melanie Clarke, Highways England’s customer service director, said: We’re doing everything we can to make journeys as smooth as possible and that’s why we’re keeping 97 per cent of the road network we manage, free from roadworks.
"Safety is our top priority and we know from experience that almost half of breakdowns can easily be avoided if motorists carry out simple vehicle checks before setting off over this period.
Traffic officers will also be on patrol and working to help clear any incidents that do occur.
Motorists are being reminded to do their bit to help keep traffic flowing by making sure they have everything they need for their journey.
Highways England says simple checks are a way to make sure the vehicle is roadworthy.
