HIGHWAY patrol's top cop has called for caution and restraint on the roads after a spate of fatalities including one in the Hunter, and speeding offences across NSW.
Traffic and Highway Patrol commander Assistant Commissioner Karen Webb said she was deeply concerned by the rash of weekend incidents.
They included the death of a driver who was yet to be formally identified on Monday after their car hit a tree on Wine Country Drive at North Rothbury about 2.20am on Sunday.
"This past weekend alone saw four lives lost on the state's roads," Assistant Commissioner Webb said.
"With those incidents fresh in our minds, it defies belief that people continue to drive so recklessly, putting not only themselves at risk, but also other motorists and pedestrians.
"Police will continue to actively target those who think it's acceptable to endanger lives through their poor driving behaviour."
Police flagged a number of speeding offences, including on on the M1 Motorway on Friday afternoon.
A 24-year-old provisional driver was slapped with a field court attendance notice after officers stopped him about 4.20pm near Ryhope.
It is alleged he was driving his Ford sedan at 177km/h in the 110km/h zone.
The 24-year-old is due to face Toronto Local Court on September 8. ed after his Audi sedan was allegedly detected travelling at 119km/h in a 60km/h zone on Soldiers Parade, Edmondson Park.
