Highway Code rule changes will allow cyclists to ride in the middle of the road

Highway Code hierarchy rules changes mean cyclists will have the right to more space on the roads.

The new rules come into force on January 29 and will instruct cyclists to take up the middle of the road unless a 'faster' car is behind them.

Cyclists will be required to pull over if there is a faster car behind them.

In total there are set to be around 50 new rules that will alter the way everyone uses the road from motorists to cyclists and even horse riders.

The Highway Code changes will also see pedestrians top the list when it comes to importance on the roads, reports Gloucestershire Live.

These rankings will pave the way for a "more mutually respectful and considerate culture of safe and effective road use," the Department for Transport says.

Another rule involving cyclists is drivers have to give anyone on a bike 1.5 metres of space when passing them.

Neil Greig, the director of policy and research at IAM RoadSmart - a road safety charity - told the Times : "A lot of drivers are going to think that somebody cycling in the middle of the lane in front of them is doing it to deliberately slow them down.

"That leads to conflict and road rage and inappropriate overtaking. Everybody needs to know all of these changes at the same time for it to work."

And The Alliance of British Drivers said the changes are possibly dangerous: “The proposed hierarchy of road users is likely to create or exacerbate resentment and ill feeling between different classes of road user, and may lead to irresponsible attitudes by cyclists and pedestrians.

“All road users have a responsibility towards all other users and should treat one another with respect and tolerance.”
